Herb Robert

rambling ratz

This little flower was abundant in Credenhill Wood back in August. I think it is Herb Robert. It is also known as death come quickly, or in the USA stinky bob. When it is crushed it gives off a nasty niff which is said to repel mosquitos.photo of herb robert

Some folk apparently used to use it as a mouthwash. This seems a little strange as the smell of it is described variously as being like burning tyres, or mousey – so you might end up with a mousey tongue. As with most plants, old fashioned herbalists claimed that it cured all sorts of things to do with livers and intestines. However, it does seem as if it was widely used for toothache and nose bleeds in the olden times.
